General information on update projects |
A project from TIA Portal version V13 SP1 can only be opened after the project has been upgraded to the current TIA Portal version. When you open the project, you will be prompted to update the project.
Modernisation of modules with know-how protection
Blocks with know-how protection are not automatically updated with the project. Remove the know-how protection of the blocks before updating the project:
- For V13 SP1 projects
Remove know-how protection with TIA Portal V13 SP1.
- For V14 projects
Remove know-how protection with TIA Portal V14 or TIA Portal V14 SP1 in compatibility mode.
- For V14 SP1 projects
Remove know-how protection with TIA Portal V14 SP1.
- For V15 projects
Remove know-how protection with TIA Portal V15.
- For V15.1 projects
Remove know-how protection with TIA Portal V15.1.
Updating protected projects
If you want to update a project protected by an administrative property from an earlier version of the product, you will need to register with this project as a project administrator and need the access data for the project.
Once the protected projects have been updated, the 'Login' dialog box opens. To continue the procedure, select the user type and enter your user name and password.
Updating global libraries
The global libraries are not updated automatically with the project, as they are project-independent. If you want to continue using the global libraries from older versions of TIA Portal, update the global libraries as well.
Manual version
Instrukcje używane do tworzenia programu użytkownika mogą mieć różne wersje. Różne wersje produktu TIA Portal mogą zawierać różne wersje instrukcji. Masz możliwość aktualizacji projektu i instrukcji do najnowszej wersji. Można wówczas korzystać z nowych wersji instrukcji. Po aktualizacji nowe wersje instrukcji nie są automatycznie używane w Twoim programie. Możesz zaktualizować swój program, aby korzystać z nowych wersji. Więcej o „Wersjach instrukcji” znajdziesz w dziale „Edytor programowania”.
Multi-user engineering
Updating projects with a missing licence
No licence is required to update your projects. If you do not have a licence or do not have the appropriate licence, you cannot use the full range of product features.
For example, if you have a STEP 7 Basic licence, you cannot use the functions provided by a STEP 7 Professional licence.
Backup devices after project update
If your project contains device backups, these are not updated when you update the project. If you compile the programme data after updating the project and load the data onto your devices, create a new backup of your devices later.
Online connection after project update
If no blocks have been modified in the updated project, no online/offline difference is usually indicated for blocks. The following symbol is shown in the right-hand column of the project tree:
If an online/offline difference is displayed if no blocks have been modified, the problem is most likely a checksum inconsistency. In the right-hand column of the project tree, you will find the following symbol:
In this case, check the update protocol in the project properties. If there is a checksum inconsistency, the blocks remain functional and do not need to be recompiled.
Updating projects |
Below you will find how to update projects from earlier versions of TIA Portal.
Upgrading projects from TIA Portal V14 or later
To update your project with TIA Portal V14, follow these steps:
The "Open project" dialog box opens and a list of recently used projects is displayed.
The "Open project" dialog box opens.
The "Update project/library" dialog box opens.
The project will be updated and opened in the current project version. |

Upgrading TIA Portal V13 SP1 projects using master copies from TIA Portal V10.5
Before updating your project, check that the master copies created with TIA Portal V10.5 are in its project library. This is necessary, for example, if during the update you receive a message about an S7-1200 CPU with software version V1.0 being used in the project, even though you have not configured such a CPU. In this case, the CPU is a master copy in the project library.
Therefore, before updating the project with master copies from TIA Portal V10.5, do the following:
|
You can then update the project to the latest version.
Upgrading projects from TIA Portal V13 or older
Projects in product version V13 or earlier cannot be updated and opened with TIA Portal. First update the projects with TIA Portal V13 or earlier product version V13 SP1. Then update the projects with the current version of TIA Portal again to project version V16.
Multi-user engineering design update |
How to update engineering designs for multiple users is shown below.
Procedure
To update engineering projects for multiple users, follow these steps:
|
Improving the know-how of protected blocks |
For security reasons, the know-how protection of blocks is linked to the version of TIA Portal in which the know-how protection was configured. This means that blocks to which know-how protection was assigned in an earlier version of the product cannot be opened and edited using the previous password after the update. However, the blocks can be downloaded to the controller and are executable. If you want to open and edit a block after the update, remove the know-how protection of the blocks and reconfigure it.
Procedure
To update the know-how protected blocks, follow these steps:
More detailed information can be found in the chapter "Removing know-how security for blocks".
More detailed information can be found in the chapter 'Configuring know-how protection for blocks'. |
Compatibility with installation configuration |
To be able to use all online functions, the installation configuration with TIA Portal V16 must be compatible with the open design version. The following compatibility factors are particularly important when designing the installation:
- Hardware and its software version
The individual devices and their software version must be supported by TIA Portal V16 and in an open project. - User programme on relevant devices
All blocks and instructions on the devices must be available in TIA Portal V16 and ready for use with the open design version.
Effect of design version on compatibility
With TIA Portal V16, you can edit projects in the V16 version. You can only upload the hardware configuration and system software that is compatible with your version of TIA Portal.
For the S7-1200 and S7-1500 series processors, you can see the project version with which the blocks on the processor are compatible on the display, on the web server and in the TIA Portal online and diagnostic view. However, it is important to note that a compatible project version alone is not enough to work with the processor. The processor itself and its software version must be compatible with the installed version of TIA Portal and the various installed products.
You can see the version of the currently open project in the project properties.
Online connection after project update
When you upgrade a project from V14, V14 SP1, V15 or V15.1 to V16, you can then connect online the devices that were loaded in V14, V14 SP1, V15 or V15.1. The blocks of these devices remain functional and do not need to be recompiled.
In this way, the installation configuration can be extended or functionality can be added to devices, for example, without making changes affecting other devices in the installation configuration.
The difference in design version is indicated in the project tree and in the comparison editor by an overlay symbol on the device.
The following symbol indicates the difference in the project version when no programme blocks have been modified:
If no blocks have been modified, no online/offline difference is indicated for blocks.
The following symbol indicates the difference in design version when modifying programme blocks:
If the blocks have been modified, an online/offline difference is indicated for the blocks. You cannot load these blocks from the device because only blocks of the same version can be loaded into TIA Portal V16.
Incompatible blocks
If an online connection exists, an offline/online comparison is carried out for the configured devices. If the modules available online are incompatible with the project version of one project, the incompatible blocks in the project tree are marked as such with the following symbol:
Loading hardware and software configurations onto the device
If you want to load the hardware configuration or software on a device on which TIA Portal V15.1 or an earlier version was last loaded, reload the entire hardware configuration and software on the device. In this case, it is not possible to only load changes. On devices on which TIA Portal V16 or later was last loaded, only changes to the hardware configuration and software can be loaded.
